Seva Canada is currently working on 13 major eye-care projects in the 7 regions where we work, split as 5 major projects in eastern Africa, 2 in Nepal, 2 in Tibet, and one each in India, Cambodia, Guatemala and Egypt. Read more below.
Reaching the unreached Support a Direct Referral Site (DRS). Currently our partner in Tanzania, the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology conducts 84 outreach camps, or Direct Referral Sites, every year or 7 a month. In order to adequately serve the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, they need to expand this service. You can support 10 Direct Referral Sites for $4,500 including transportation, staffing and supplies. Read more here.
Reducing the burden of childhood blindness in Africa Seva Canada is seeking funding to train a Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Coordinator to create a comprehensive childhood blindness program in Tanzania that can be replicated throughout eastern Africa. Read more here.
Eye care for girls and women throughout eastern Africa You can fund an African gender and blindness faculty position, with support staff, develop programs and conduct training. Read more here.
Regional change agent in Africa Support the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology as regional change agent for transforming eye units across eastern Africa into high-quality, high-volume, low-cost units. Seva is seeking funding to develop 10 model eye care programs across eastern Africa. KCCO is the only organization in Africa with the capability necessary to change the way eye care is provided. Helping Africa help itself The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthallmology is a regional training centre for community eye care in eastern Africa. Seva Canada is seeking funding to help Africa help itself by training local eye-care specialists. This includes the transformation of the Resource Centre and Library at KCCO into a training centre. URGENT NEED: Bus for Geta Eye Hospital The hill districts of western Nepal are some of the poorest and most underserved regions of the world. There is a very high rate of preventable and treatable blindness here, mainly due to cataracts. Seva is seeking funding for a bus to transport patients to the Geta Eye Hospital in the SW corner of Nepal and to also transport the eye care teams into the hills to conduct screening and surgical eye camps. Eye care in the remote hill districts Seva wants to create another 9 Primary Eye Care Centres in remote districts of Western Nepal that currently have no eye care whatsoever. Seva’s initial goal was 11; one has been created with Wild Rose (inaugurated in Dec 2008) and one more will be created through Nepal donor trip in March 2009, meaning that there are 9 still to do. Seva is seeking funding to training 2 staff for each centre, equip the centre and for one year of operating costs per Centre. Read more here.
Gender and Blindness in Nepal Seva is seeking support to fund a Gender and Blindness Coordinator and gender program at Lumbini Eye Hospital in Nepal, as well as for outreach programs for women and girls throughout Nepal. Read more here.
Support the Kham Eye Centre Support the community outreach programs through the creation of 10 vision centres, equipment funding, and staff training of the Kham Eye Centre. Total cost to set up and run the hospital and outreach is about the price of a condo in Vancouver. Read more here.
Tibetan eye camps Each year Seva conducts about 25 eye camps a year in remote areas. Each camp serves up to 500 people and performs 200-300 sight-restoring cataract surgeries. Cost $15,000 per camp. Read more here.
Blindness prevention in Guatemala Support Visualiza, a family-run network of 3 eye hospitals and outreach services. Funding will go to community training and outreach and patient subsidies. Read more here.
Blindness prevention in Cambodia Support the Battambang Ophthalmic Care Centre (BOCC) in training, surgical camps, community outreach and patient subsidies. Read more here.
Creation of 10 more Vision Centres Seva is seeking funding to develop community ophthalmology programs in partnership with Aravind Eye Care System through the funding of new vision centres in the country. There are currently 3 centres and 10 more planned. The cost per centre is $38,800, including equipment, operating and outreach. Read more here.
Eye care for girls and women in Egypt Seva seeks support for eye care for girls and women in Egypt through funding a Gender and Blindness Coordinator, faculty position at the Al Noor Hospital in Cairo and outreach programs for women and girls throughout Egypt. Read more here.
