Consider the story of Thuon, a 13-year-old student in grade 7 living in a rural village in Mongkol Borey, Cambodia. For the past two years she had difficulty seeing clearly which made it hard for her to read, write and participate in class. Thuon and her parents worried that her poor vision was negatively affecting her grades and her self-esteem as she began falling behind her classmates.

Thuon was tested by her teacher shortly after and was found to have poor vision and was scheduled for a follow-up exam by the nurse.

When the refraction nurse came and examined Thuon she diagnosed her with farsightedness and prescribed a pair of glasses.

As kids in low-income countries go back to school in an uncertain time, one thing is for certain: they need to see to succeed. Kids who can’t see clearly easily fall behind in school resulting in poor classroom performance.

Kids without healthy vision are 3 times more likely to struggle in class, yet 63% of vision problems in school-aged kids are easily treatable with an eye exam and a pair of glasses.

A simple pair of glasses brings a child’s world into focus and transforms their life. When a child can see they can go to school and pursue their studies, play with friends, and grow up to lead healthy, productive lives.
