In a quiet village in Tanzania, Mwanaidi Ally Nyaela had always been the cornerstone of her family.
At 52, this strong mother spent her days peeling and crushing cassava into flour to sell at the market. She cared for her grandchildren, and she kept her home alive with warmth and love.
Mwanaidi after sight-restoring surgery.
“I used to care for my grandchildren,” Mwanaidi told us quietly. “But when I lost my sight, I became dependent myself.”
Cataracts slowly clouded her vision. Even the simplest tasks became dangerous. The smoke from cooking fires stung her eyes when she could no longer see the flames. Walking to the farm became impossible; she couldn’t see what lay in her path. The cassava business that helped to support her family came to a halt.
Imagine the heartbreak of a grandmother who once cared for everyone, now needing her young grandchildren to help her light a fire… when they should be in school.
Her son, Robert, had to abandon his studies at technical college to help support the family. Her husband, once her partner in farming and family life, now carried the burden alone. He became both provider and caretaker. The family’s foundation was crumbling.
Mwanaidi was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts at an outreach screening run by the Bugando Medical Centre. She was scheduled for sight-restoring surgery, funded by caring people like you.
With her sight restored, Mwanaidi’s life began anew.
Her entire family gathered in celebration—her husband, children, grandchildren, and even the neighbours came to welcome her home. With radiant joy, she looked around and truly saw them all again.

“You can see how happy I am,” she beamed. “Even the neighbours are happy today!”
Now, with her sight restored, stability is returning. Mwanaidi can recognize her grandchildren’s faces from across the yard. She’s back to making cassava flour and Robert and her grandchildren have returned to school.

Your support today can also transform the life of a child like Yvette, a young girl in Burundi. At just 8-years-old, Yvette couldn’t see clearly enough to follow her lessons or read her textbooks. She had to drop out of school and became isolated and depressed. Yvette rarely smiled. But thanks to Seva Canada donors like you, Yvette was diagnosed with cataracts and received life-changing surgery. With her sight restored, her smile has returned — along with her ability to go back to school.
This is what your generosity makes possible.
