From Tears to Triumph: Amandeep’s Journey to Confidence

Twelve-year-old Amandeep had lived with a visible squint or strabismus since the age of two in her village in the Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab. Her eyes did not align properly, but looked in different directions. Her parents took her to several hospitals trying to find treatment for their daughter, but either it was unavailable or unaffordable. Unable to afford surgery, her parents watched her grow up sad and withdrawn—tearful every morning, not wanting to go to school where she was relentlessly teased, and silent at family gatherings. When they heard of an outreach screening camp happening near their village, they took Amandeep, hoping beyond hope that something could be done for their daughter.

At the screening camp, Amandeep’s life was about to change forever. Thanks to donors like you, she received free squint correction surgery performed by Dr. Pankha.

When we saw her again, she was transformed—confident, smiling, making friends, and dreaming of becoming a doctor. “She told me, I’m so happy, I feel so beautiful now after the surgery,” said her thrilled mother. “Thank you Dr. Pankha and all the staff at the eye hospital and Seva Canada. We are so happy and grateful for the support, help with travel, all the staff and doctors – they changed Amandeep’s life.”

Thanks to you, one simple surgery didn’t just align Amandeep’s eyes—it restored her self-esteem, joy and passion for learning.
