During my recent volunteer trip to Burundi on behalf of Seva Canada and KCCO, I documented an outreach where the local eye care team, led by Dr. Levi Kandeke, conducted three days of community screenings, followed by two days of treatment at the hospital for the many patients found in need of care, providing essential eye care to hundreds of children and adults in remote areas.
I observed four cataract surgeries, three of which were performed on infants and one on a 10-year-old patient. Witnessing these procedures was both educational and deeply impactful. Dr. Levi explained each step clearly and professionally, enhancing my understanding of the process. The post-operative results were remarkable. All the infants responded positively to light, and the 10-year-old patient expressed visible joy upon regaining sight, actively exploring his surroundings and capturing photos.
This rewarding experience marks my third trip to Africa, following previous visits to Ethiopia and Benin to document Seva Canada’s partners’ work in action. I remain enthusiastic about contributing my photographic skills to future projects.
Thank you for the opportunity.
