Wendi is a bright, spirited young girl from a dusty, remote village in Petén region of Guatemala — and she recently celebrated her tenth birthday. With a big smile on her face she blew out the candles on her cake and made a wish.
But it is only because of Seva donors like you that Wendi now has the chance to make that wish come true.
Just a few months ago, Wendi was blind in her right eye because of a childhood injury that had caused a cataract to form. With no affordable eye care services nearby and no ability to travel to get help, Wendi faced an uncertain future. As a young girl growing up in the developing world, Wendi already faced many challenges. Her vision loss would put her future independence in jeopardy, and it would make her more vulnerable to poverty and a low quality of life.
Breaking down barriers to access
People who live in rural communities in the developing world have difficult lives. They often rely on subsistence farming to survive and have little economic opportunity. Without reliable eye care access near their communities many go needlessly blind because they cannot get the care they need.
Without sight, people lose their independence and their ability to provide for themselves and their family. Breaking down barriers to access and providing high-quality eye care to the farthest corners of the globe fights poverty and restores hope for the future.
For Wendi, everything changed when she received the help she needed after a Seva-sponsored outreach team arrived in a nearby town. Seva donors funded Wendi’s sight-restoring cataract surgery, and the prescription glasses she now wears.
Because of Seva donors, Wendi is no longer visually impaired — and she celebrated her tenth birthday this year with hope and optimism for her future.
